Secret Weapons for Tired Mummies

50s_pin_up_car-heelsNow trust me when I say I’m really not one for an extensive range of beauty products. I’m the person that goes to bed with their makeup on {shock horror, yes, I know, bad for my skin} and just washes it off in the morning. I also forget to cleanse and tone on a regular basis, and if I’m totally honest, I’m not completely sure which one you’re supposed to do first.

So imagine my surprise when I turned 34 at the end of last year and suddenly started caring about having a beauty regime. I know, who’d have thought it?! Least of all me. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but the fine lines under my eyes and the dark circles that accompanied them {parental occupational hazard} suddenly started to become more noticeable. And that bothered me. And it bothered me that it bothered me.

Ok, so maybe ‘beauty regime’ is a bit of an overstatement. I still go to bed with my makeup on, but I’ve definitely started to take better care of my skin {in the mornings at least} and have discovered some magical products that disguise those tired-mummy giveaway signs along the way.

So here is my list of top 5 secret weapons for tired mummies. Or for anyone that just wants a little extra oomph:

Clarins1. Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch – amazing at covering those pesky visible pores and fine lines. Feels like silk and nourishes your skin at the same time. A great base for foundation. I think it’s actually magic in a pot.

Estee lauder2. Estée Lauder Double Wear Brush-On Glow Highlighter – when the girl in the shop tried to sell me the benefits of a highlighter to hide dark circles, I was skeptical. I wanted to hide the rotters, not highlight them. But I can honestly say it works! I wear this on top of my foundation, and it illuminates the skin so that light reflects from under the eye, giving {dare I say} a more radiant appearance. Almost reminds me of my pre-children eyes…

chanel3. Chanel Rouge Coco Shine – I love the idea of lipstick but rarely wear it. I can never find the right colour and hate anything too obvious. But I recently stumbled across this little beauty and I think I’m in love. It’s moisturising with a subtle hint of sheer colour and not too heavy. Perfect splash of colour for work or the school run. At £25 it’s pricy, yes,  but when I add up the money I’ve wasted on various shades over the years, it’s a bargain.

benefit4. Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Gloss –  I love gloss as an alternative to lipstick, but I find many of them are sticky and feel unpleasant after a while. This little gem arrived in my Christmas stocking {well done hub} and it’s probably the best gloss I’ve ever used. It’s not at all sticky or gloopy, gives a gorgeous shine which lasts, and you can pop it in your handbag {who am I kidding? I mean nappy bag…} for when you need a quick freshen up.

Next5. Just Pink Intense Eau de Parfum by Next – a great little everyday perfume when you don’t want to waste your posh perfume on a day at home with the kids! It’s got a floral scent with undertones of caramel and sandalwood and a quick spritz makes me feel fresh and {almost} human. If only it could make me look younger, too…

So there you have it – my top five beauty products that a) I never needed before turning 34 and now apparently can’t live without, b) make me feel a little more presentable to the outside world and c) remind me that even when I’m covered in dribble {the kids’, not my own} and playing superheroes, I can still look half decent.

Who knows, by the time 35 rolls around, I may just start taking my makeup off at night. One step at a time, though…

What’s your secret weapon?

Oh Suzanne, you must must try Arbonne CC cream – magical! It comes in different shades depending on skin tone. Happy to get you some and send it over. It is the best thing since sliced bread – like you I’ve never had a beauty regime and I still don’t (I’m 48 next birthday) but apparently I don’t look my age so thank you genes! 🙂 Yet, CC cream is my latest discovery and makes me look fresh even on the most dire days!
