The idea behind the little chap in red is that Santa sends him to live with a family in December and each night he flies back to the North Pole to report back to Santa on whether or not the children in the house have been naughty or nice. Although I found that idea a little creepy – who wants a spy in their house at Christmas? So I just told Big Monkey that Santa had sent Buddy to live with us and each night he would fly back to tell him about all of the lovely things he’d seen, and then each morning he would be in a different place in the house.
Now of course Elf on the Shelf is for the kids…but if I’m really honest, it’s been a source of huge amusement for myself and the hub. He’s been loving getting creative and putting Buddy in totally inappropriate scenarios, which I then make him change and find a more child-appropriate place for Buddy to be found in the morning. But I’ve got to applaud him for his misplaced creativity.
Big Monkey loves racing downstairs each morning to find out when Buddy is hiding. Even Little Monkey is getting in on the action, and when we ask, “Where’s Buddy?” he raises his hands and shouts “eh!” – which I’m assuming either means ‘there!’ or ‘for goodness sake, stop asking me where that stupid elf is.’
So without further ado, I present to you the best of Buddy, our Elf on the Shelf:
